_WORLD WATCH______________________________ Abortion legalized Forbidden under Taliban rule While being freed from repressive Taliban rule, Afghanistan has also been afflicted with one of the horrors of its liberators: abortion. Agence France Presse reports that abortion up to the third month of pregnancy is now legal in Afghanistan, while under the Taliban from 1996-2001 abortions were banned. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has been operating in Afghanistan for years attempting to legalize abortions. Their most recent effort came under the guise of assisting Afghan women displaced by the war. Under a campaign called “Saving Women’s Lives in Afghanistan,” UNFPA says it is promoting “reproductive health” in Afghanistan. However, the organization includes access to abortion as “reproductive health.” In an October press conference on the Afghan project, Pam Delargy, manager of the UNFPA Humanitarian Response Group, spoke of abortion as a “reproductive health concern.” She said, “Among displaced populations, we also know that unwanted pregnancies can cause women or girls to resort to unsafe abortion, which can result in lifelong health problems or even death.” Beyond promoting abortion in Afghanistan, the UNFPA has been supplying abortifacient drugs and implements. In a story first reported by the US-based Population Research Institute and then confirmed by the Pakistan News Service, the UNFPA has been exposed as having distributed abortion devices and chemicals, disguised in kits that were marked so that they appeared to be intended for use by doctors helping women in childbirth. |
