_WORLD WATCH______________________________ Suicide bill decried by Rome Vatican sees moral crisis for medicine The Vatican daily newspaper has criticized a Belgian Senate vote authorizing physician-assisted suicide. L’Osservatore Romano noted with disapproval that Belgian legislators, by a 44-23 vote, had approved a bill that would make it legal for doctors to administer fatal medical dosages to their patients. The Vatican paper observed that if the lower house of the country’s legislature also approves the bill, “Belgium—the country where the late King Baudouin preferred to suspend his sovereignty rather than approve a law allowing abortion—will become the second European state to ask doctors not to heal, but to kill.” Back to Catholic World Report December 2001 Table of Contents |
