Minister dismissed after scandal
Lover died, apparently after abortion

The interior minister of Guinea Bissau has been dismissed from office, without any public explanation, after a scandalous love affair which ended in a woman’s death.

Artur Sanha had become the target of noisy public demonstrations in July when a young woman died, and her relatives said that she had been involved in an affair with the interior minister. The family added that the woman had become pregnant, and the government official had forced her to have an abortion. Thousands of residents of the capital city, convinced that the family’s reports were accurate and that complications from the abortion had caused the woman’s death, staged public demonstrations denouncing Sanha as a murderer.
