_WORLD WATCH______________________________ Patents on human life? The militant environmentalist group Greenpeace of Germany has revealed that at least 1,000 people have applied for European patents on various forms of life during the last two years. Greenpeace Germany also disclosed that the European Patent Office has already granted patents to two groups that have sought legal protection for their development of human embryos. One such patent has been granted to the University of Edinburgh; the other is for the Australian corporation Amrad. Greenpeace found that at least ten other applications involving patents for human life—involving the development of human embryos—are still pending in the European Patent Office.
