Vatican seeks “humanitarian corridor”
Asking for cooperation in Belgrade
Archbishop Paul Josef Cordes, the president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, traveled to Belgrade early in June to meet with Yugoslavian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic for a discussion of Catholic charitable efforts in the Balkans.
Archbishop Cordes has made several recent visits to Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Albania, and embattled Kosovo. The purpose of his latest visit was to advance an effort by Catholic charitable groups to establish a “humanitarian corridor” for the delivery of aid supplies. The creation of such a corridor would require cooperation from the Belgrade government as well as from the neighboring countries that have recently split from Yugoslavia.
Cor Unum was established in 1971 by Pope Paul VI to coordinate the personal charities of the Pope and help to coordinate the humanitarian efforts of the Holy See.
