American nun killed in Guatemala
Veteran missionary was robber’s victim

A member of the Sisters of Charity was killed in Guatemala City on May 7, apparently the victim of a robber.

Sister Barbara Ann Ford had worked in Guatemala for two decades, helping victims of the country’s 36-year civil war which left more than 200,000 people dead before peace accords were signed in 1996.

“She was just so dedicated to the Latin American people, especially the indigenous people,” Sister Doris Smith, a spokesman for the religious order, said from New York. “She loved to be with them, to teach them to take care of themselves because they are so oppressed and poor. She wanted to find ways to help them get out of that morass.”
