UN official plans resignation
Former Irish president to step down

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, the former president of Ireland, has announced that she will resign from her position in September at the end of her four-year term.

Robinson indicated that the reason for her decision to leave was based on the lack of funds available to the Human Rights Commission and because she felt constricted in terms of the activities she wanted to pursue. “I believe that I can, at this stage, achieve more outside of the constraints that a multilateral organization inevitably imposes,” she said. Her office receives $30 million per year.

Over her tenure at the UN, Robinson has been one of the most outspoken proponents of homosexuality and abortion under the guise of protection from discrimination based on “sexual orientation” and “reproductive rights.”
