Invitation to Pope
Stop on visit to Ukraine?

The Catholic Church and the government authorities of Kazakhstan have officially invited Pope John Paul II to visit the new Central Asian Republic following his scheduled four-day pastoral pilgrimage to Ukraine, next June 21-24. A first invitation had been addressed to the Pope by Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev, when he was received in audience in the Vatican on September 24. An official invitation has now come from the Bishop of Karaganda, and the three Apostolic Administrators of Almaty, Astana, and Atyrau.
