Policeman wounded…
… in robbery attempt at bishops’ offices

The entire executive commission of the Argentine bishops’ conference, numbering 20 bishops, made an unusual hospital visit on December 13. The bishops—led by Archbishop Estanislao Karlic of Parana, the president of the episcopal conference—were paying their thanks to a police officer who was wounded while preventing a robbery at the bishops’ headquarters.

During his nightly rounds on December 7, Raul Ortiz had encountered three thieves trying to break into the offices of the Argentine episcopate. After a short exchange of gunfire, the policeman prevented the robbery, but was seriously wounded by two bullets. The bishops visited Ortiz at the Churruca hospital in Buenos Aires, where he was in stable but critical condition, several days after the incident. “We came here to express our support and our gratitude for his bravery and exemplary sense of duty, as well as to comfort his family and pray together,” said Archbishop Karlic.
