UGANDA

Missionary priest killed
Rebels implicated in death of Italian

An Italian missionary serving in Uganda was apparently murdered by rebels as he drove to celebrate Mass on the first Sunday in October, according to the MISNA missionary news agency. Father Raffaele Di Bari, 71, was shot and killed by members of the Lord’s Resistance Army, MISNA said. A nun and a catechist traveling with the priest escaped without injury before the car burst into flames. Father Di Bari had been an outspoken critic of the LRA, which is led by a man who claims to have supernatural powers. The group has been accused of enslaving children as soldiers and prostitutes.

Father Di Bari had told MISNA recently that he had escaped another attempt on his life. His mission “gave voice to these people, denouncing the atrocities that the rebels commit almost daily against women, old people, and children,” Father Giulio Albanese, MISNA’s director, quoted Father Di Bari as having said then.
