Concern over human rights
Violations and abuse continue despite changes
The Malawi bishops’ conference has expressed concern over increasing numbers of human rights violations, abuses, and social injustices.
Father Andrew Timpunza, secretary of the Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace, said it was a pity that seven years after attaining multi-party democracy, many innocent Malawians, especially women and children, were still victims of human rights abuses and social injustices.
“It is very unfortunate that many people’s rights to good education, health, water, and many others are being hindered by powerful individuals who happen to occupy high positions of authority,” said Father Timpunza.
“When we say injustice, we mean whatever goes against justice, including vices such as corruption, abuse of human rights, and bad leadership,” the priest told a workshop of volunteers from the various dioceses in Malawi.
