NAMIBIA

Land mine in church
Angolan rebels responsible

A land mine exploded in a Catholic church in the Kavango region of Namibia on May 29, when a young woman stepped on it as she left the church. The explosion injured ten people.

The anti-personnel land mine exploded following daily Mass in the Ntara Catholic Church when Renate Nekaro stepped on it, severing her foot. She was admitted to a local hospital along with an elderly woman who had sustained serious injuries. Eight others suffered less serious injuries.

Angolan UNITA rebels claimed responsibility for the explosion. UNITA has been protesting Namibia’s arrests of refugees fleeing from Angola, and has vowed retaliation against Namibian targets unless the arrests stop.
